Linnavuori Health Insurance Fund (LHIF) acts as a workplace fund within the meaning of the Health Insurance Act (National Health Insurance id no. 32503), and acts as the local national health insurance (KELA) office for the insured.
All new employees have the right to join LHIF. An application must take place within 3 months of the start of employment. The insurance premium is 1.6% of gross biweekly / monthly salary as stated in the rules of the health insurance fund. The fee will be deducted automatically from the employee’s paycheck by the employer and paid into the fund.
Applying for the insurance is voluntary.
Insurance in the health insurance fund brings financial security in the event of illness. The LHIF pays benefits to the insured in accordance with the Health Insurance Act (reimbursement of medical expenses, sickness allowances and pregnancy and parental benefits).
In addition, the LHIF pays additional benefits, in accordance with its rules, as follows:
Physical treatment
The LHIF reimburses 75% of the physiotherapy and physiotherapeutic examination, up to a maximum of 15 treatments per calendar year.
Applying for compensation: submit the invoice, payment receipt and the doctor’s referral to LHIF. File your claim within 6 months of the original expense.
Massage
The LHIF reimburses 75% of treatment provided by a trained masseur, up to a maximum of 10 treatments per calendar year. The maximum compensation amount is €400 per calendar year.
A doctor’s referral is not required, but the masseur needs to be licensed (the right to use the professional title of masseur can be checked at https://julkiterhikki.valvira.fi/).
Applying for compensation:
Submit the invoice and payment / cash receipt to the health insurance fund. The receipt must contain the following information: name of the masseur, business ID / registration number, name of the person being treated, dates of visits and price of the massage. File your claim within 6 months of the original expense.
Other treatments
The LHIF reimburses 75% of naprapathy, chiropractic, osteopathic and podiatrist treatment and occupational therapist’s sessions prescribed by a doctor, up to a maximum of 5 treatments per calendar year for all of the above-mentioned treatments.
Applying for compensation: see section massage, plus the doctor’s referral. File your claim within 6 months of the original expense. The doctor´s referral should always be written before starting the treatment.
Hospital fees and health center fees (in public health care)
Hospital outpatient fees and health center fees are reimbursed in full.
Hospital day care fees are reimbursed in full, for a maximum of 180 days due to the same illness.
Applying for compensation:
Submit the invoice and payment receipt to the LHIF (free receipt printed from online banking). File your claim within 6 months of the original expense.
Prescription drugs
LHIF reimburses drugs prescribed by a doctor that are reimbursable according to the Health Insurance Act.
Annual liability is not reimbursed (50 € / year).
Applying for compensation:
The LHIF has contract pharmacies where you can receive compensation by presenting your national insurance card (with the LHIF register number 32503).
A list of contract pharmacies may be found on the website header under “sopimuspaikat -> sopimusapteekit” (list in Finnish)
If you visit a pharmacy that is not one of our contracted pharmacies -> submit the original receipt, calculation and KELA reimbursement application to the health insurance fund (application sv 178). File your claim within 6 months of the original expense.
Specialist fees
The LHIF reimburses 80% of the specialist’s fee, but not the fee for a doctor undergoing their specialization or specialized in general medicine in case of treatment necessary to cure a disease, excluding dental diseases.
The LHIF reimburses 80% of the cost of procedures performed in a specialist’s surgery, excluding the fee for surgery or a similar procedure. In-patient charges for the procedures are not reimbursed, except for inpatient fees for endoscopic examinations for which 80% is reimbursed.
Research and treatment
The LHIF reimburses 90% of laboratory examinations prescribed by a doctor and examinations in the field of pathology, as well as related sampling. The maximum amount of compensation is €3,000 per calendar year per insured person.
The LHIF reimburses 90% of radiological examinations prescribed by a doctor, but not other measures taken in connection with the examination. The maximum amount of compensation is €3,000 per calendar year per insured person.
Office fees, e-prescription fees or base fees are not reimbursed.
Applying for compensation:
The health insurance fund has contract locations where you can receive a direct refund by presenting your KELA card (with the LHIF register number 32503).
A list of contract offices may be found on the website header under “sopimuspaikat” (list in Finnish).
If you visit a medical center without a contract -> you will pay the fee yourself and send the invoice and receipt to LHIF to receive a reimbursement.
Eyeglasses
The LHIF reimburses €400 once every two years or €800 every four years for spectacles, contact lenses and laser surgery prescribed by a doctor or optician after one year’s insurance period in the fund. (The compensation of €800 can be received at the earliest after the membership has lasted for 4 years)
You can apply for compensation in several installments during the same calendar year.
The optician’s eye examination fee will only be reimbursed when purchasing spectacles.
Applying for compensation:
You can get a voucher from the LHIF to buy glasses or you can deliver the original receipt for the glasses (please check that your name is on the receipt).
Dental care
The health insurance fund reimburses dental care €400 per year when the insurance has lasted for a year.
Reimbursement includes treatments by a public dentist and oral hygienist, treatments by a private dentist and oral hygienist, including non-Kela reimbursable treatments, with the exception of aesthetic treatments (e.g. teeth whitening).
X-ray examinations are compensated as examination costs and do not have an effect on the dental care annual maximum allowance.
Compensation for dental care may also be used to compensate for occlusal splints for bruxism, snoring and sleep apnea.
Applying for compensation:
You can submit an invoice for the dentist’s fee to the LHIF. The dental center can make a KELA deduction and the invoice is enough to claim compensation. The compensation will be paid to your account. File your claim within 6 months of the original expence.
Mobility and other aids
The LHIF reimburses €150 per year for the first purchase of dressings, aids, artificial members and equipment prescribed by a doctor, which cannot be obtained, either permanently or temporarily, free of charge.
The LHIF reimburses €150 per calendar year for the purchase of support insoles prescribed by a doctor.
Applying for compensation:
Submit a doctor’s referral and a receipt for the paid aid or insoles to the LHIF. File your claim within 6 months of the original expence.
